United Nations Human Rights Council
The United Nations Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body, comprising 47 States, whose mission is to strengthen the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms around the world. Established in March 2006, it addresses human rights violations as and when they occur, and focuses on preventing and resolving such crises. The Council discusses all thematic human rights issues and country-specific situations that require its attention. Its first session was held in June 2006. One year later, the Human Rights Council adopted its “Institution-Building” package by resolution 5/1 to guide its work and set up its procedures and mechanisms.
